An Update on Music

Hello Byte Community,

We want to take a quick second and offer up an explanation for recent content strikes for music usage on the platform. Most importantly, we want to address the way in which the strikes were conducted, and focus on how we can do better moving forward.

An update regarding music on Byte

Music on videos is awesome, and we want to make sure you have it. That said, as we work to build a platform with a sustainable foundation, we must take steps to ensure that we are adequately protecting the rights of individuals and groups external to Byte + Clash as well as the rights of those on the platform. We respect the rights of copyright owners and hold our users to the same standard as explained in Byte’s Copyright Policy*.

Last week we implemented a new content identification system that improves the speed with which we are able to process, review, and strike, when necessary, content that is identified as infringing. This was a necessary and inevitable step that enables the continued existence and improvement of Byte and this community that we all love.

The goal has always been to deploy a new integrated music feature onto video upload. This allows everyone to express their creativity to the fullest. Implementing a new system was a necessary step towards enabling new music tools — and the long term existence of our community.

We messed up

We had to make some tough decisions regarding music. That being said, a decision was made that directly impacted you all and your videos and we did not properly communicate the implications on your experience before the resulting impact was felt. We know we messed up there, and we are doing our best to rectify this moving forward.

Where we go from here

We need to improve communication with the Byte community. We value your input, and are building to ensure the long term success for both communities. Our plan moving forward is to improve the visibility of updates proactively. This means utilizing the channels you the community are most active on. As we near the rollout of the new app, please refer to the @byte account in app, and for future product updates on @clashappco accounts on Medium and Twitter.

Moving forward with music

Another thread that we heard from you all loud and clear is that the criteria through which videos were reviewed were incredibly stringent. We as a platform needed to take swift action and needed to lean on the side of caution through this implementation to ensure we were upholding the standard set in the DMCA.

Now that we have successfully implemented a new system, we are working hard to refine these criteria to both avoid striking content that does not infringe on copyright ownership in the future and unstrike any content that was wrongfully struck initially. This is an ongoing process that will continue to be updated in the future.

In the interim, if you have any questions or believe the removal of your content was in error, please reach out to us at

*When content on Byte is identified as infringing, we remove that content as required by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), 17 U.S.C. § 512(c), and as explained in Byte’s Copyright Policy.
